As many of you know I have gone through some tough times and disappointing races this past year. Going into Challenge Cairns Half in June I had not completely recovered from pneumonia. I took a long time to bounce back and during that time I made the change to train under professional Ironman coach Kristian Manietta of Trispecific Coaching.
Kristian helped me recover and made me see the limitations health puts on training and how training through health problems can lead to many months out of the game. While pushing my body beyond the barriers too early, I started to lose fitness and lose the mentality that had kept me in the sport of triathlon for now 10 years.
Competing in Las Vegas Ironman 70.3 World Championships I started contemplating my future in this sport and where I should be heading. With the result that I had at worlds, it drove me to say I wasn’t going to race anymore. After talking things through with Kristian and some close friends I decided to continue through to Phuket 70.3 in December and see how things were after that.
After the race in Phuket I became sick again, but for a change I listened to my coach and my body and took the month off. During that month I had a lot of time to think over what I had worked for, what I have wanted to achieve, what I have achieved and thinking about the support of all of you, and this has taken me into a whole new spirit in 2012.
Picking up Specialized Bicycles, K9 Cycles and Hammer Nutrition as my sponsors was a great boost last year and with any luck I can continue with their support to bring bigger and better things to you this next year.
Putting the 2011 season behind me, I am looking into the future for racing and looking at revamping a few things. I have a few big announcements to come and after a few more details are organised I will endeavour to update you all again.
I appreciate the support you all have given me over the years and I look forward to your continuing efforts to keep me in the game. I hope you all had a safe Christmas and New Year.
